US IPTV industry milestones during the coming year
Key industry milestones that will drive the uptake of IPTV across the US during 2008 have been identified by WebsEdge, a provider of web-based channels for private and public organisations in America.
The three key elements surrounding the provision of IPTV to consumers, companies, and organisations throughout the United States are the capacity and speed of the network to individual premises, relevant and quality content to be viewed, and a functional online source for viewers to access the video content.
Stephen Horn, CEO, of WebsEdge thinks that 2008 will bring faster network speeds, which will propel new and better IPTV content.
One area where most change will be seen over the course of 2008 is in fibre networks. It is predicted that the dispute between FTTN or FTTP provision will be settled, allowing fibre networks to grow throughout the country, thereby speeding up online connections and simultaneously accelerating the adoption of IPTV by American households.
Following the strides already achieved in data compression and the provision of live streaming, future improvements in video quality will make packet loss less of an issue.
It is expected that there will be increased demand for pay-per-download video sales. The steady decline of standard video rentals will be a direct result of the growing popularity of online video rentals.
Traditional television networks have struggled to make their programming available via the web to keep up with consumer appetite for online content. During 2008, the networks will have opportunities to refine a variety of business models including pay per episode systems and video ad-supported viewing systems.
In 2008 there will be improvements in User Generated Video, including easier uploads, more online editing systems, and more interactivity through mobile devices. The rapid rise of UGC has undoubtedly had a revolutionary impact, but as high speed internet improves, viewers will expect higher image quality and improved production values.
With the growth in UGC proving to be a primary social communication tool, businesses will take note of the trend and a greater number of organisations will use IPTV to communicate with their stakeholders.
As a result of the growing demand of IPTV for business use, there will be a steep increase in Professionally Generated Content (PGC), which is content generated by professionals, organisations, communities and companies. As HD video makes its way into IPTV, UGC will struggle to keep up bringing more PGC video production in its wake.
