Skinkers readies Livestation for launch

by Jan Harris

Skinkers, which demonstrated its peer-to-peer (P2P) live television streaming platform, LiveStation, at the IBC conference earlier in September, is in final negotiations with TV stations.

The platform will be unveiled at the trial launch date of the service in coming weeks. Skinkers expects the service to be available for public use from 2008.

While P2P internet TV services such as Joost, Zattoo, and Babelgum, offer television shows for viewing as video on demand, Livestation will offer live streaming broadcasts using Microsoft technology.

Using Microsoft Silverlight for the user interface and peer to peer technology, internet nodes send packets of information to a computer, allowing for constant live streaming.

The service will include desktop alerts, to let users know when a programme they are interested in is playing.
