Draft paper on India’s IPTV expected soon
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is likely to issue its draft paper on IPTV services within the next month. The paper will set out the guidelines for this much-awaited service.
The issue has been engaging the attention of TRAI for some time, mainly due to lack of clarity on who can provide IPTV services. In this context, the regulator had earlier sought a consultation paper on this, seeking the opinion of various stakeholders.
Responses have been received and they are being processed.
TRAI has proposed a draft modification to the existing Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act. It feels the issue to be addressed is the technological requirement of IPTV services to deliver content through a set top box.
This might lead to non-compliance of the existing Act, which would need modification.
