BSkyB claims Sky+ is UK’s leading on-demand service
Broadcaster, BSkyB, highlighted the importance of online video via its Sky Anytime on-demand Service, at the recent IPTV World Forum 2008 event, at Olympia, London, claiming that it is the leading on-demand service in the UK.
At the event, Griffin Parry, BSkyB’s Director of On-Demand, spoke on the theme “Technology is not an end in itself - it is a slave to the experience”, and confirmed the company’s focus on a hybrid distribution model.
BSkyB’s ‘Sky Anytime’ service is available on a PC via the Internet, and is also available on the television using push-VOD; Sky Mobile TV has 200,000 subscribers across three mobile phone networks in the UK; while six linear channels are streamed for viewing on the PC.
Parry classified Sky+ PVR time-shift viewing as an on-demand service and said BSkyB recorded 3.4 billion such events in 2007, supporting his claim that Sky+ is the UK’s top on-demand service.
Sky Anytime TV provides push-VOD titles on an operator-controlled portion of Sky+ hard drives. It features 40 hours of content, which is regularly updated, and is available in 1.9 million homes and used in 1.2 million.
