Miniweb provides web-style interactivity on TV

by Jan Harris

Miniweb Interactive Ltd, a new company created through a management buy-out of the SkyKeys/Internet Sites service, has been launched.

The UK company has secured a global license for TV browser technology from BSkyB, and will deliver a TV service which brings together TV viewing, online services and interactive advertising across multiple TV distribution systems.

Miniweb will replace the current SkyKeys/Internet Sites service with an innovative new interactive TV service by the end of 2007. It will be available in over 8.5 million BSkyB households.

Miniweb reduces the costs associated with interactive TV development by enabling websites to be repurposed as ‘TV Sites’. This provides web-style interactivity on TV.

The development and deployment of interactive and enhanced TV applications is simplified through an open platform based on internet standards.

Developers are able to create content once and then publish it across multiple TV platforms which consumer can access from any set-top-box/CPE.

Miniweb is launching interactive products for both broadcasters and businesses, including TV Key, which is similar to a URL or search term. TV keys are memorable words or brand names which translate to numeric codes for use with TV remote controls.

The key provides direct access to TV sites. Businesses will pay a registration fee to Miniweb, and will then be able to use TV keys in advertising and promotions.
