2.5 million German IPTV subscribers forecast by 2012
According to a study conducted by consultancy Goldmedia and supported by the German Association of Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media, there will be 2.5 million homes subscribing to IPTV services in Germany by the year 2012. Annual turnover generated by IPTV services in Germany is expected to reach €420m by 2012.
Approximately 100,000 homes in Germany are forecast to subscribe to IPTV services by the end of this year. The current annual turnover generated in Germany by IPTV is in the region of €13m.
The forecast takes into account turnover generated by basic fees for TV packages as well as pay-TV fees and turnover generated by video-on-demand and other payable additional services. What the figure forecast does not include is turnover generated by advertising, as well as indirect revenues which are generated through the marketing of triple-play packages for telephony and broadband Internet.
Germany is currently behind other European countries in terms of IPTV subscriber numbers. There are currently around two million subscribers in France. An appeal has been made for policymakers in Germany not to suffocate the new market with over-regulation. Policymakers must bear in mind the fact that legislation for traditional broadcasting cannot be applied to telcos offering IPTV.
