National Hockey League to go IPTV
The National Hockey League (NHL) has had a really hard time getting any decent exposure on the major media networks. This is no good for a sport that does actually have a large following, but has never really been able to compete with American Football and Baseball. This however has not deterred them, in fact they even more determined to move forwards.
The major thrust of the NHL and the thirty teams within the league, is to use IPTV as their vehicle to gaining the exposure that they feel they should be getting.
By using IPTV the NHL will be able to offer nationally the games on demand, and locally the teams themselves can keep the fan informed on events, extended game features, team news and the community programmes etc. This has already been tested by using two teams, The New York Rangers and The New York Islanders.
This is a great opportunity for the NHL and the teams. Who will be able to increase the time that games are on TV live. This will not only give the fans a better and extended programme, but opens up huge revenue sources from advertising, this is the key to successful IPTV, the more advertising that you can get on the channel the better.
This will open up the way for minority sports to get involved in live TV and specific TV where programme line ups are directly related to the channels main sporting theme.
