German Pay TV Operator Premiere and German Football

by David Masters

In a new agreement the German top football league has signed an agreement with pay TV operator Premiere. This in reality means that the current contract holders cable TV company Unity are out and that there will be some very new deals drawn up in order to get some sort of working model going.

This is a major step forward for a company like Premiere to gain the full rights to the German Bundesliga, the German equivalent of the UK’s Premier League.

The deal will affect viewers throughout Europe including the UK as highlights are shown on TV here. Initially there will be agreements that take the right to show the programmes until there is some sort unified agreement. At the moment it looks like the football will be marketed though Unity and also through the Premiere network.

This is going to be a very complicated deal, with Unity owning shares in Premiere, but they will have to sell those shares when the initial agreement expires in 2009.

Yet Premiere will be distributing the football games and programming through the Unity cable networks for six years.

This is going to show all those involved in sport and TV how difficult it is going to be switch from network to another. This sort of deal has been seen in the UK too, with SKY, the BBC and ITV networks all trying to secure Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup games. But the deal ends up with the programming being shared, it all makes for a confused situation.
