More IPTV for India

There is a new IPTV service being launched in India. BSNL is the second company to launch, the first was MTNL. Although there has been lots of media buzz about the new technology, there haven’t been that many reviews of the new services.

The big problem that IPTV is facing is content. With so many restrictions on what can be viewed, content choices are extremely limited to viewers. The major internet protocol companies are beginning to realize that the profit from IPTV is far away (if there it will ever be profitable).

IPTV, as a concept, is great. It would allow consumers to pick what they wanted to view. At the same time, it would allow advertisers to target the exact audience wanted for different products. It would take a large investment to get the delivery system ready for mass IPTV usage. No one seems ready to put that kind of money into such a shaky market.

Another potential threat to IPTV is the TiVo like services that are becoming popular for many of the cable providers. These allow viewers to program the televisions to their liking and allow them to skip commercials.

If IPTV is ever going to meet its full potential then the industry leaders will have to make the investments that are needy. The concept is there, the consumers are ripe for something that puts them in control, and the advertisers want to use their money more wisely. IPTV offers it all.
