IPTV stakeholders in India discuss future policies with government
India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and stakeholders of IPTV in India have discussed the future policies of IPTV services before guidelines are implemented within a maximum time frame of a month.
In the inaugural session of the Round Table discussion at the IPTV India Forum, recommendations were made regarding uniformity in pricing and regulation of content as compared to other platforms.
One stakeholder said that IPTV was the same digital content in IP format and reached homes through different platforms. Its uniqueness is that the two basic ends, that of consumer and content, remain the same.
It was noted that, if there is a law to govern content broadcast, there is no need for another set of laws for the same content in a different format and available at different platforms. IPTV would bring in video-on-demand, user-generated content and many other value-added services like gaming.
It was requested that the Government must come forward and identify which bands and sub-bands should be allocated for mobile TV out of the available range of 585 MHz to 806 MHz frequency, and also to set specific dates for the auction for spectrum bands.
This would enable consumers to get content related to 2010 Commonwealth Games on their mobile devices. It would also help provide more interactivity and scope for value added services, and that would be a good proposition from a consumer and business point of view.
The Ministry will consider the recommendations made during the discussion when finalising the IPTV services guidelines. It was requested that the stakeholders provide suggestions to the Ministry or to TRAI - the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India - on the IPTV Policy.
