16,000 sign petition to extend iPlayer

An e-petition about the BBC’s iPlayer, on the 10 Downing Street Web site, has been signed by over 16,000 people.

The petition calls for the Prime Minister to ask the BBC to develop an iPlayer for non-Windows platforms.

iPlayer, the BBC’s online TV on demand service, was downloaded over 120,000 times in just one week after the beta version was launched on 27 July.

The service is currently only compatible with computers running Windows XP operating system.

The e-petition argues that the BBC’s decision to launch the service on a single platform excludes certain groups of the population from using the service and is therefore against the ethos of the BBC.

The BBC plans to develop an iPlayer for Apple Macs and Microsoft Vista this year.

Today marks the deadline for signing the petition and a Government response is expected in the coming weeks.
