Televisa will use TANDBERG’s MPEG-4 Systems
TANDBERG Television, who are a division of the Ericsson Group, have announced at the NCTA’s The Cable Show that their MPEG-4 AVC video encoding and distribution systems have been selected by Grupo Televisa aka, Televisa to deliver programming throughout Mexico via satellite, utilizing DVB-S2 8PSK modulation.
This move from MPEG-2, will make the company, North America’s first broadcaster to have an all MPEG-4 AVC distribution network.
The MPEG-4 AVC uses an equal amount of satellite bandwidth as MPEG-2, which will allow Televisa to broadcast both HD and SD content simultaneously; until now they have only been capable of providing SD.
Televisa broadcasts via three networks throughout Mexico, channels 2, 5, and 9, using 258 affiliated TV stations spread across the country.
The company also has 30 television channels using no less than 14 different pay-TV brands reaching over 18 million subscribers in nearly 50countries, including Mexico, the US, Oceanía, Canada, as well as Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe.
TANDBERG’s MPEG-4 AVC system will allow Televisa a much more effective utilization of available bandwidth for HD and SD programming.
The systems will reduce the bit rate by over 50% compared to MPEG-2 while still providing high picture quality.
The solution features the TANDBERG Director, an all-in-one digital distribution control solution.
Director manages and controls TANDBERG’s receivers, and updates both HD and SD receivers by a system of over-the-air downloads enabling the latest software code updates to be added automatically.
Software delivery can spotlight one receiver, a specific group, or the whole receiver network.
Director’s GUI enables a single system view of the entire receiver network. This allows operators to make changes at a moments notice.
Increased bandwidth utilization will be provided by a combination of TANDBERG’s Reflex and PREKOR systems.
These will enable up to 30% more channels on the same amount of bandwidth, without loss of image quality. Reflex is a multiplexing solution used by several thousand channels globally.
PREKOR is a dynamic pre-correction system which enables broadcasters to gain maximum performance from a satellite transponder through transponder linearization techniques.
The MPEG-4 AVC that will be used by Televisa will include the EN8090 HD and EN8030 SD MPEG-4 AVC encoders, MX8400 IP multiplexers with Reflex statistical multiplexing, the nCompass Control management system, Director distribution control solution, SM6620 modulators with Prekor for the broadcast headend and RX1290 professional receivers for the affiliate sites.
