Next-Gen MPEG-4 STBs From Pace Americas
Leader in digital TV technology development for payTV, Pace Micro Technology, have announced the imminent release of their next-gen MPEG-4 advanced compression set-top boxes.
Pace unveiled the new boxes at Cable Show ‘08 which was held in New Orleans, in the Ernest Morial Convention Center.
The new boxes are designed for use by cable providers throughout North and South America.
Pace have been leading the market in payTV technology for some time, and since buying out Royal Philips Electronics, a set-top box and connectivity company, have established a world-wide employee base which includes one of the industry’s most renowned specialist engineering teams.
The cable market has grown and changed over the last few years, and part of that change involves the emerging desire for high definition (HD) picture, as well has video on demand in HD as well.
Pace have recognised that not every customer is going to want each and every functionality, so have created a family of MPEG-4s to ensure a full solution is available.
When using the new boxes, providers will be able to transfer data via digital networking only, all digital simulcast (ADS), or switched digital video (SDV).
Pace has ensured some degree of longevity with the new boxes, by including support for IP based delivery via the DOCSIS channel bonding solution.
Pace has also recognised that providers are in a transition period, with some going onto tru2way (OCAP), and some staying on the cable networks already established and using TVGuide and Aptiv type applications, and as such, these boxes have the pliability of being able to be deployed under both conditions, successfully.
Pace have a strong record for being highly flexible in the market, as they have been developing payTV technology across all platforms of delivery, from terrestrial and cable, to satellite and IPTV.
The new range of boxes are manufactured to be used both by providers and subscribers, and as such, have been specifically designed to fit in with any modern home entertainment center.
Along with the sleek look to the outside of the product, the inside is just as modern.
Pace have implemented a micro-footprint approach to the new boxes, and have included advanced thermal control, which will keep both heat and energy levels very low.
The boxes even include an external SATA port, so users may expand hard drive space, as well as ports for Dolby Digital sound, HDMI, and external IR receiver input.
Vice President of Product Development at Pace Micro Technology in America, Bruce Gureck, has said that this new range is going to allow providers a much smoother transition from content delivery on MPEG-2 to MPEG-4.
The new range is also capable of withstanding the increasing demand on high-bandwidth programming such as high definition, switched digital video, and video on demand.
The three set top boxes being released as a part of the MPEG-4 range are the Aspen, which has a dual tuner, along with HD DVR and a CableCARD; the Apache, which is a HD CableCARD box; and the Denali, a standard definition CableCARD box.
The specifications for the boxes include full integration between MPEG-2 and MPEG-4; full compatibility with existing networks as well as supporting OCAP/tru2way; and front end tuning with a range of up to 1 Gigahertz.
Advanced DSG capabilities are included, which will allow for two-way messaging as is being seen in next-gen applications.
All three boxes also support encrypted data, out of band signaling, and multiple billing systems.
Subscribers will have access to video on demand, switched digital video, and subscription video on demand, along with the currently implemented interactive television applications such as TVGuide, Aptiv, GuideWorks, TVA, Seachange, Arris, Concurrent, Tandberg, and Integra 5.
Pace Micro Technology’s new MPEG-4 range will be deployed later this year.
