Europe leading worldwide growth in IPTV
Europe accounts for almost 60% of the worldwide growth in IPTV, which rose to 14 million households in 2007 from 4.7 million users in 2006.
The figures have been produced following new research by Parks Associates, a market research and consulting firm focused on all product and service segments that are digital or provide connectivity within the home.
The research comes as ISPs have raised concerns that current Internet infrastructures are not designed to cope with the surging demand for multimedia applications.
The signs of a maturing market makes it even more necessary for service providers to prepare for faster consumer uptake of IPTV over the coming year.
Operators and service providers are investing in new television services that compete for consumer’s attention. The market is estimated to be worth approximately $8 billion worldwide.
New services like Project Kangaroo are being developed, which is a broadband service to pool BBC, ITV and Channel 4 programming for delivery on demand. The joint venture aims to create a one-stop shop media player enabling viewers to download their favourite TV shows.
