UKTV enhances interactive services via xPlayer

by Jan Harris

Multi-channel provider, UKTV, will benefit from a more sophisticated interactive play-out capability, as Red Bee Media is upgrading the interactive facility it receives from mobile entertainment group, YooMedia.

YooMedia’s xPlayer system now provides more intelligent allocation of bandwidth, enabling broadcasters to provide more interactive features in less bandwith.

Red Bee Clients, including UKTV, will be able to use the upgraded xPlayer to provide more interactive services via the red button, during commercials and programming.

The system recognises when interactive elements are about to be broadcast and makes sure that data is delivered to the satellite at the point of broadcast.

XPlayer can also be used to update website content and promote the delivery of interactive services on all platforms - IPTV, PCs, mobile phones and games consoles.

UKTV is an independent commercial joint venture, between Virgin Media and BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC. Its channels include UKTV Gold, UKTV History, UKTV Style, Dave, UKTV Drama, UKTV Documentary, UKTV Food, UKTV People and UKTV Gardens.
