Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has won a major contract with Oi, Brazil’s largest fixed line operator.

Under the terms of the contract, the first in Latin America for NSN, the company will develop an IPTV infrastructure for Oi.

It is anticipated that the service will be launched in Rio de Janeiro by the end of 2007. The financial terms of the contract have not been disclosed.

Under current Brazilian regulations, Oi is only be allowed to provide video on demand. The new infrastructure will allow Oi to switch on IPTV when required.

NSN expects the market to grow rapidly with an expected 1 million video on demand subscribers in Brazil by 2010 and 1.8 million by 2012.
