IPTV Service Being Expanded by AT&T
AT&T’s next target for its IPTV expansion is the city of Fort Smith, Arkansas. The company has recently put together a tentative agreement with the city officials there to offer video services. The San Antonia- based AT&T has agreed to pay 4 percent of gross revenues to the city of Fort Smith for the privilege of offering its services there.
IPTV is delivered to subscribers over the Internet, bundled with the broadband service AT&T U-Verse. This is the company’s attempt to compete with cable companies that are offering 3-teir bundling of all data services – cable television, broadband internet service, and VOIP telephone service (Voice over Internet Protocol).
AT&T will offer IPTV to limited areas initially. Those areas that are unaffected by the IPTV will have a comparable satellite service to choose.
Many cities have had difficulties when it comes to regulating IPTV. Fort Smith seems to be handling it well. Cox Communications, which has a franchise agreement to provide cable TV services through the city, has announced that is will not oppose the new IPTV service.
AT&T is looking to other Arkansas towns to continue the IPTV spread. Next up is Fayetteville, which meets soon to discuss the issue.
IPTV will continue to grow in popularity as big named telcos, like AT&T, continue to offer it in as a bundled service with their other products.
