Skinker joins Microsoft with Live stream
UK based Skinker is partnering with Microsoft to develop a service called Live Station, which will compete with both Joost and Sling box. Because the system can stream live video on any device, or rather virtually any device, while on the desktop it will be Microsoft’s Silverlight that will stream the video in high resolution.
So it would seem that you can stream live television on a computer, without having to use traditional server infrastructure and bandwidth, as you normally would with streaming. This is how the system is similar to Joost and many other on-line TV providers, although Live Station features live video too.
As far as content goes, there will be BBC programmes, in order for this to be a viable and practical solution the content has to be there from day one, after all the BBC can be seen on normal TV, so we will need to wait and see what they have to offer as far as content goes.
The main part of this that looks promising is the live video which is interesting to many people including the content providers who could use this feature to send over live broadcasts of events such as sport and concerts.
