BBC content available from Apple Store
The BBC has entered into a deal with Apple, making popular BBC TV programmes available for download from the Apple iTunes Store in the UK.
Programmes will appear on iTunes after they have been made available to view on the BBC’s iPlayer catch-up service. They will be available from iTunes for £1.89 an episode.
Viewers will be able to watch the shows on a variety of devices including a computer, iPod with video, iPhone or Apple TV.
The deal includes popular BBC programmes such as Torchwood, Life on Mars, Little Britain, Spooks, Robin Hood and Ashes to Ashes.
The BBC is the first UK broadcaster to offer programmes on iTunes. The agreement also marks the first time that the BBC has asked viewers to pay to download content.
According to Simon Danker of BBC Worldwide, the deal is part of the BBC’s strategy to give viewers a range of options on where and how they view BBC programming, and to make it available to the broadest possible audience.
The BBC is also planning a joint on-demand content service with ITV and Channel 4, which should launch later in the year.
