200,000 IPTV customers for Swedish telco TeliaSonera

by Lin Freestone

Swedish telco TeliaSonera has registered its 200,000th customer for its domestic IPTV service, twice the number reported in May 2007. At present more than 2.5 million households in Sweden are inside TeliaSonera’s footprint for IPTV services.

In July, TeliaSonera’s customers set a new record for its video on demand service, renting nearly 1,000 movies per day.

In Sweden the broadband network has clear benefits over the older cable TV network. With TeliaSonera’s recently launched smart broadband, all that is needed by customers is a single box at home to connect TV, broadband, telephony, and much more. The Telia Smart package includes an all-in-one gateway featuring a broadband modem, built-in wireless network, IP telephony adaptor and a firewall.

TeliaSonera is the leading telecommunications company in the Nordic and Baltic region and also holds strong positions in mobile communications in Eurasia, Turkey and Russia. TeliaSonera posted sales of SEK 91bn in 2006 ($13.57bn), and in March 2007 its total number of customers exceeded 100 million in 15 countries.
