The shape of things to come

by David Masters

IPTV has the potential to become the media of choice for many people who have very different views and tastes. Yet the major obstacle that the providers and producers have is competing with today’s internet. Figures are growing day by day and more services are being added like Web 2.0.

So what is in store for IPTV? Over the next couple of years there will be many changes to how people watch TV and this is where IPTV will have the upper hand over the internet. But at the for most, the content is a bit like a holding page with access to mainly pay per view events and movies, couple with some sophisticated search features.

But in the pipeline there will be stock tickers, messaging, chat, video telephony, searchable databases and so on, plus the ability to find video content fast and easily, this will be the most important and valuable service on IPTV. Along with Interactive TV, in France viewers can actually create their own TV channels on TV Perso, customers upload video streams to their set top boxes which is better than satellite or cable where the choice is really made for you but put into packages for convenience.

Advanced IPTV Features:

Location-based traffic and weather reports

IM buddy lists

Real-time chat

Local theater tickets, ringtones

Live polls

Amazon-style e-commerce

Create and share home videos

Doctor and nurse house calls
