On-demand TV viewing doubles

by Jan Harris

According to Tiscali’s TV Trends Report 2008, on-demand video is twice as popular in the UK as it was a year ago, with over one third of UK viewers now watching it regularly.

Tiscali found that 86 per cent of people watching on-demand TV are watching at least as much as they were a year ago.

Most of the people watching TV on-demand (63%) watch the content on TV sets, while just 38% watch on-demand content on a PC, probably because of the comfort factor.

The report found that a major reason for people not watching on-demand TV is because it is perceived as too expensive or because they are unsure how to access the content.

Those who do watch it cited a number of reasons for doing so, including catching up on a missed programme (58%), overcoming schedule clashes (39%) and flexibility.

The report finds that on-demand TV is particularly popular with younger viewers - 45 per cent of 16- to 34-year-olds have viewed on-demand content, compared with just 22 per cent of over-55s.

According to Neal McCleave, managing director of media services for Tiscali UK, the ‘Tiscali TV’ IPTV and on-demand service, was developed for consumers who want more choice and flexibility than Freeview, but don’t want to pay over the odds for satellite or cable services.

Tiscali TV competes against the BBC’s iPlayer, Sky, Virgin Media, BT Vision and 4oD, Channel 4’s on demand service.

Tiscali’s TV Trends Report was based on a survey conducted by Tickbox, which polled 1,760 adults in the UK.
