SingTel Makes IPTV License Agreement
SingTel, Asia’s leading communications group, is about to take a stand in the pay-TV market with its recently acquired IPTV nationwide license for Singapore.
In the past, SingTel was not able to offer consumers a complete communications package. Now it will have the TV, data, and voice all in a one-stop shopping package that consumers have been looking for.
SingTel has already created the platform to launch the new services – Generation MIO. The MIO set top boxes prepare the home to receive pay-TV and home monitoring.
Communications giant, StarHub, has had a virtual lock on the IPTV in Singapore up until now. The new license agreement will allow SingTel to compete in a heads on state against StarHub. This kind of competition is almost always good for the consumers.
SingTel has many opportunities to help shore up its place in IPTV now that it is in the game. The greatest opportunities probably lie in the niche markets. There are many specialty channels available that aren’t being carried by provides. SingTel needs to tap into these channels so that is can stand out from the competition because of the variety of stations that is offered through them.
IPTV looks to have a bright future in Singapore. The key to its success lies in the market being open to competition. SingTel has made the first step towards making this a reality.
