BBC iPlayer extends support with Adobe Flash
The BBC outlined a number of developments for iPlayer in a management briefing, including a strategic partnership with Adobe.
The broadcaster will use Adobe’s Flash software to underpin its free iPlayer on demand service by the end of 2008.
The development will allow iPlayer to work on platforms other than PCs, including Mac and Linux systems, and will speed download times for streaming video.
The partnership will also cover video content on the BBC’s other sites, such as BBC News.
The deal includes the roll-out of an embedded media player for video and audio content. This will enable users to share content on websites such as Digg and Del.icio.us, and also in blog posts.
Other developments in the pipeline include a deal with Telegraph.co.uk, to offer users of the site the opportunity to link to iPlayer content from the newspaper’s TV and radio listings web pages.
The BBC has also secured a deal with wi-fi hot spot operator the Cloud, which will make iPlayer available in 7,500 UK hot spots.
iPlayer users will be able to access content for free via link on the Cloud’s homepage. The service is available in locations such as McDonalds and Coffee Republic and also outdoor locations such as Canary Wharf and the City of London.
The BBC also plans to launch iPlayer on the Virgin Media cable TV network in early 2008.
