IPTV expansion in India
Following the successful penetration of broadband throughout India, it is speculated that the spread of IPTV will be the next area to gain momentum in the sub continent. IPTV is expected to be available in around 30 cities in the next 18 to 20 months.
IPTV is currently commercially available in Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata and is now showing signs of gaining traction in the Indian market.
IOL Broadband Ltd, an IPTV content provider based in Mumbai, is planning to deploy the triple-play service comprising telephone, high speed internet and cable television in as many as 28 cities by March 2009.
Seven cities will receive the services during the rest of 2007 and into 2008. By March 2009, 21 further cities will receive the services. IOL Broadband’s mission is to be the leading Indian integrated communication service provider in the IPTV industry, and plans to capture a client base of over six million people.
IOL Broadband has an agreement with BSNL, a New Delhi-based telecoms provider, for access in 59 cities and, depending on the requirements and broadband penetration, they will be prioritised. Under the terms of the agreement, IOL will provide content and market the services, while BSNL will provide access to customers.
BSNL, a state-owned telecom company, has aggressive plans to expand the broadband network. In the coming three years, the company has plans to add six million broadband connections. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) was formed in 2000 and is the world's 7th largest telecommunications company, providing a comprehensive range of telecom services in India.
