EchoStar moves into Cable Industry
EchoStar Corporation subsidiary, EchoStar Technologies L.L.C., has announced at ‘The Cable Show’ its move into the cable industry and the creation of CableLabs Certified DOCSIS 2.0 SlingModem at CableNET.
A few months ago, EchoStar was spun-off from DISH Network Corporation, but held onto its set-top box business and other parts of its infrastructure.
EchoStar then took over Sling Media; they are now seriously looking for OEM partnerships with cable operators across the globe.
EchoStar have stated that they are now committed to the cable industry, and wish to take advantage of their long systems and manufacturing experience.
SlingModem is a new place-shifting device, which combines a DOCSIS 2.0-certified cable modem with the Slingbox.
Cable subscribers can utilize the unit as a traditional DOCSIS cable modem with added built-in Slingbox functions.
SlingModem directly connects to either a coax cable or a regular set-top box; subscribers can then view either live or recorded TV on any Internet-enabled device.
EchoStar does have the advantage of a long consumer electronics background, including, award-winning DVR set-top boxes.
SlingModem is the company’s first product to be marketed to cable operators. EchoStar is currently developing various other products and services for cable operators expected to be released before the end of the year
The annual gathering of telecom and cable industry members, known as ‘The Cable Show’ features networking, training, and new product releases and demonstrations.
