iPlayer attracts 1 million users a week

by Jan Harris

The number of iPlayer users is still growing rapidly according to new figures from the BBC, with the average number of daily requests to download or stream programmes exceeding the half million mark last month.

The service has attracted 25 percent more users month-on-month since its launch on Christmas Day, with a total of 42 million programmes accessed on-demand.

The number of requests for the iPlayer download and streaming services was 11.2 million in January, 14 million in February and 17.2 million in March.

On average, the service attracted 1.1 million weekly users in March, compared with 750,000 in January.

The BBC has entered into a collaboration with Nintendo UK, to offer the iPlayer via the Wii games console.

Nintendo Wii users can now stream BBC programmes directly to their TVs via the console.

The alliance with Nintendo is part of the BBC’s strategy to make the iPlayer available on as many platforms as possible.
