Vodafone considers IPTV /DTT service in Portugal

by Jan Harris

Mobile telecommunications company, Vodafone, is considering entering the Portuguese IPTV and digital terrestrial television market, according to Antonio Coimbra, the CEO of Vodafone Portugal.

Coimbra believes that there is a good chance that Vodafone will enter the IPTV market in 2008 and, with its strong presence in the ADSL segment, it already has the infrastructure in place.

The company is considering whether to enter the DTT tender alone or as part of a consortium.

Spanish telecommunications company Abertis Infraestructuras has already approached Portugal Telecom SGPS regarding a possible bid. PT Multimedia is also believed to be interested.

Vodafone Portugal has sent its final report to communications regulator Anacom and is awaiting the launch of the DTT tender, before finally deciding whether to participate.
