IPTV in McDonald’s in Italy provided by Broadband International

by Lin Freestone

Using Broadcast Internationals’ CodecSys, SkyRec is to implement a private IPTV network in 335 McDonald’s restaurants throughout Italy. This will be the first implementation of its kind.

In partnership with Samsung Italy, the new network will deliver proprietary video content. This content includes sports, live news and sports, in addition to pre-recorded commercial content. The network is expected to be put into place within the next two months.

“The SkyRec application of our CodecSys software demonstrates the versatility of our technology,” said Broadcast International CEO Rod Tiede.

Private IPTV networks, such as SkyRec’s, are an ideal way to deliver commercial video content directly to customers. BI’s technology allows these networks to be deployed using 80% less bandwidth than would otherwise be necessary, greatly reducing cost while improving video quality.

SkyRec is paving the way for the delivery of these kinds of services, especially in Europe, where IPTV has such a strong foothold.

CodeSys offers live HD video at less than 3Mbps, cutting bandwidth requirements to a fraction of what is needed for HD-quality video over cable, satellite, IP, or wireless. This performance is achieved via a patented, multi-codec approach.

The SkyRec implementation of CodecSys uses an IPTV infrastructure, but the CodecSys software can nevertheless be deployed on almost any delivery platform. This includes cable, satellite, IP, or wireless.

SkyRec is the leading supplier of in-store radio services in Italy.
