BBC iPlayer launching on Christmas Day

The BBC has decided to launch its iPlayer IPTV service on Christmas day. A beta version of the software has been available for several months, with some users experiencing technical problems with the service.

Hopefully the BBC will make enough support staff available over Christmas to deal with any issues as they arise.

The company chose the launch date because of the high quality content offered by the BBC over the Christmas period. The BBC’s iPlayer provides access to the last seven days of BBC TV content.

iPlayer is compatible with computers running Windows XP or Vista. A streaming service, for those on other platforms, such as Linux, is expected to launch within the next two weeks.

The BBC also plans to integrate the current Radio Player, which already offers a library of BBC Radio content on demand, into the iPlayer service.

The launch of iPlayer will be accompanied by a marketing campaign, involving TV, radio and poster ads.
