Parks expects 60 million IPTV subscribers by 2011
According to a new report from Parks Associates - “IPTV: From Quadruple Play to Multiplay†- there will be around 60 million IPTV subscribers around the world by 2011.
The number of IPTV subscribers is expected to grow 138% in 2007, to 10.85 million worldwide, compared with 4.56 million in 2006.
Parks expects the provision of IPTV services to present a variety of challenges in different markets.
The European IPTV market is expected to grow particularly quickly as market forces encourage providers to launch non-traditional video services and provide ‘Multiplay’ bundles.
Market factors are encouraging the growth of multi-channel television delivery, more reliance on residential gateways and the ongoing development of converged communications services, according to Parks.
However, although Europe now has 51% of the world’s IPTV subscribers, this is expected to drop to 43% within three years.
Parks believes that growth could be hampered in Asia by regulations preventing telecom providers from offering unique content.
Although the infrastructure is available in Asia, IPTV providers could struggle to differentiate their services from cable competitors.
The US is lagging behind Asia and Europe, although carriers are aggressively marketing services. Verizon has launched its FiOS TV service and ATT is rolling out its U-verse TV service in several major markets.
