Orange to launch IPTV in UK
Mobile phone operator, Orange, has announced plans to launch a UK IPTV service sometime this year.
The announcement was made by the chairman of Orange’s parent company, France Telecom Group, at Mip TV, the international audiovisual content trade show.
The new service, which will show premium movies and TV series on 6 channels, would have been launched earlier, but it took longer than anticipated to secure authorisation from the UK regulator.
The launch of the IPTV service is part of Orange’s business diversification strategy, and will allow the company to distribute media content via mobile networks, the Internet, and also via satellite broadcasting through an agreement with Eutelsat.
This will make the service available to customers not covered by Orange’s IP network.
