IPTV Providers Taking It Slow
Many subscribers are hungry for providers to roll out new IPTV services, but the industry doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to meet these needs. The number one hold up to the new technology is security. Providers and broadcasters are trying to find ways to protect the information that will be projected over the internet.
The two biggest security issues seem to be how to protect the copyrights of content and how to protect the networks themselves from any external attacks.
Protecting the content that comes in through IPTV will probably be the easiest situation to fix. Restricting subscriber’s ability to copy and distribute the copyrighted material could be as easy as putting an extra image on the screen when it is copied (similar to what is done with dollar bills).
Protecting the IPTV networks could prove to be more difficult. The bad guys are always searching for weaknesses in technology that they can exploit, and this is no exception. The IPTV providers don’t want to find themselves in the same boat as VOIP last year when so many providers were hit with denial-of-service attacks.
Some companies are hard at work developing security measures for IPTV. Without these measures, it will not be possible to adequately meet the demands of the consumers. Industry experts are confident that the obstacles will be overcome.
