BBC iPlayer racks up 120,000 downloads
iPlayer, the BBC’s online TV on demand service, has already been downloaded over 120,000 times, just one week after its beta launch.
The service is proving so popular that the BBC expects this number to reach 500,000 within six months, and reckons that iPlayer will account for 11 per cent of catch up viewing by 2011.
Demand doesn’t seem to have been dented by reported usability problems - there have been some issues with downloading the technology and getting it to work correctly.
On the whole thought, the mood on the BBC’s iPlayer forums is generally positive, as is borne out by demand for the service.
The iPlayer is based on similar technology to Channel 4’s 4OD service, which expects to reach the 500,000 mark soon.
Verisign and Red Bee Media provide Peer to Peer technology for iPlayer, whicle 4OD is underpinned by Kontiki.
iPlayer also uses Microsoft’s Windows Media DRM technology and is, therefore, currently only available on Windows XP. A version for Macs is under development.
