Asia embraces IPTV faster than UK

The British AREN’T coming.

Not into the telephony technological age – at least not now or with any urgency in the future.

The Asian market is much quicker to embrace the emerging technology of IPTV and VOIP. China leads the way when it comes to consumers logging into the television using IPTV technology with Japan in second place. The rest of the world falls behind.

In China, more than 75% of broadband consumers said they had used broadband to watch downloadable or streaming music video clips. In second place, 45% of Japanese consumers said they were watching TV over broadband.

Industrialized countries like the US and Italy fall short of that to only 37%. The UK and France bring up the rear with 33% and 27% respectively.

The UK doesn’t seem in any hurry to embrace IPTV technology. Earlier this month, regulations were proposed for the new technology. Industry analysts, such as Ofcom International Communications Market Report, have been silent on the effect that regulations may have on the IPTV market in the region.

The UK falls way behind the rest of the world when it comes to high definition subscribers. Currently a mere .4% of UK consumers subscribe to any kind of HD programming.

In China, 12% of homes have broadband and over 70% watch television using the IPTV technology.

Through out the world, consumers are reporting that going on line makes them less likely to continue watching television by traditional means.
