O2 to expand IPTV and mobile ad services
Mobile operator, Telefonica O2, is planning to strengthen its IPTV and mobile advertising offerings through a new venture capital programme.
The company is planning to make strategic investments in small businesses in the IPTV, mobile and fixed line sectors.
O2 UK launched a broadband service earlier in 2007, but has not yet announced its strategy for mobile advertising or IPTV.
Telefonica’s director of innovation, Russ Shaw, is leading the strategy and has already secured deals with two companies, one of which is London-based. Three more deals are expected imminently.
Shaw will make investments on behalf of O2 Europe, Telefonica Spain and Telefonica Latin America, which will sponsor the companies they invest in and probably take a seat on their boards.
This model will allow O2 to get a feel for local markets, while the businesses in which O2 invests will benefit from O2’s global experience and size.
