PMC-Sierra Releases 10G EPON Study
A study detailing new 10G Ethernet Passive Optical Network technology was released today by PMC-Sierra, titled 10G EPON Brings Advantages to the Fiber Access Network.
This new 10G EPON is expected to encourage advanced technologies in next-generation high-definition IPTV solutions, along with high-bandwidth programs.
With the advent of IPTV, and other bandwidth heavy applications becoming more common in the home, Fiber to the Home technology solutions are being sought by vendors, as broadband technology that is currently available will not be able to meet the requirements of next-generation applications.
10G EPON is one of the options being looked into to solve the bandwidth dilemma, as it will provide a ten-fold increase to current bandwidth capabilities, up to 10Gbits per second, with the use of a fiber which will be compatible with the 1G EPON networks that are currently in place.
10G EPON Brings Advantages to the Fiber Access Network was written by PMC-Sierra’s chief system architect for FTTH business, Lior Khermosh, and PMC-Sierra’s EPON product manager, Gilad Aloni, and has offered a full overview of 10G EPON systems.
PMC-Sierra is currently one of the leading broadband communications providers, offering a wide range of services from wireless infrastructure and fiber to the home (FTTH), to storage and access gateway solutions.
March 2008 saw PMC-Sierra release the first full reference designs for 10G per second IEEE 802.3av EPON Optical Line Terminals (OLT), PAS8001, and Optical Network Units (ONU), PAS9001.
The two design sets outlined capabilities for the 10G EPON solutions, along with integrating third party commercial transceivers and optimising system performance.
The full study can be found at PMC-Sierra’s website.
