Telecom Italia in talks to offer all Sky channels by IPTV

by Lin Freestone

Italian daily newspaper Il Corriere della Sera has confirmed that Telecom Italia SpA is in talks with News Corporation to broadcast all of Sky Italia's channels on its IPTV service. Rupert Murdoch, News Corp Chairman, had earlier denied rumoured negotiations.

Currently, the telecommunications company only carries Sky Italia's premium package, which offers a limited number of channels.

The newspaper said that the content deal would aim to boost Alice Home TV, Telecom Italia’s IPTV service, launched a year ago. Alice Home TV has about 30,000 clients.

Ex-chairman of Telecom Italia, Marco Tronchetti Provera, who left the company last Friday after a major disagreement with Italian prime minister Romano Prodi over the sale of its TIM mobile unit, had earlier claimed he was in talks with Murdoch.

Telecom Italia Group is a leading Italian multimedia enterprise, operating in fixed and mobile telecommunications, internet and media, office and system solutions, and research and development.

It is thought that News Corp is also in content talks with the telecommunications operators Tiscali SpA and Wind.
