Sony technology could turn PS3 into a PVR

by Jan Harris

In an interview with New Zealand publication ‘The Press’ Warwick Light, Sony’s New Zealand marketing chief, revealed tentative plans for a digital television tuner for the PlayStation3.

Sony’s tuner, which would probably be added via one of the console’s four USB ports, would effectively turn the game console into a digital video recorder.

The PS3 has all the necessary components to handle standard or HD television, including a hard drive, graphics processor, Blu-Ray/DVD support, and networking capabilities.

The hard drive is on the small side, though, for recording HDTV - raising speculation that a larger capacity drive could be on the cards too.

Warwick Light suggested the first quarter of 2008 as a possible launch date for the tuner, around the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service in New Zealand.
